Adoring fans
of '80s music, this is YOUR week If
you're one of the many people who stuck a comb in the back pocket of your black
corduroys -- you know, the ones you wore on Fridays with your favorite black and
white Van Halen T-shirt -- you're about to be one happy camper. This is a
great week for children of the '80s. Not only are Van Halen and Sammy Hagar reuniting
for a tour this summer, but Aerosmith has a new CD out, and there is a brand new
local radio show dedicated to the best rock of the decade. First, the Van
Halen news. After vowing NEVER to work with Van Halen again unless he lost every
penny he had, Sammy Hagar has agreed to make amends with his former band. Apparently,
Mr. Hagar must have owned mucho stock in Enron, because he has chosen to forgive
and forget the cold way he was fired on Father's Day eight years ago, and will
lead Van Halen this summer on a coast to coast concert tour. According to
his interview with Howard Stern, Sammy says the reunited band has been working
for the past three months on some new songs and are putting the finishing touches
on their first release, aptly titled "It's About Time." Van Halen (or
should I say Van Hagar) makes its closest stop to New Bedford on June 19, when
they play the Worcester Centrum. Tickets for the show go on sale at 10 a.m.
this Saturday; call TicketMaster at (508) 931-2000 or go online at ticketmaster.com.
David Lee Roth and his toupee will be standing by with operators to take your
orders. Meanwhile, after nearly 34 years in rock and roll, Aerosmith has
released yet another CD this week. "Honkin' on Bobo" features one original
Aerosmith song and 11 remakes of the band's favorite blues songs, including covers
from Bo Diddley, Aretha Franklin, Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, Sonny
Boy Williamson, Mississippi Fred McDowell and more. Aerosmith's first release,
a Big Joe Williams' cover of "Baby, Please Don't Go," has already soared
to No. 1 status on 100.3 KKB. After your first listen, it is abundantly clear
that this band still has the ability to completely "bring it." Steven
Tyler's vocals are (as always) right on and the band is just a well-oiled machine.
Listening to "Honkin' on Bobo" is a lot like opening up a '66 Mustang
on 195. It might be old, and it might have made a few pitstops at the local body
shop, but it definitely still cooks. Aerosmith will be honkin' at the Tweeter
Center on June 24. Cheap Trick opens. Finally, this Saturday night is the
premiere of a local '80s rock show called "Unchained '80s." It debuts
on 100.3 KKB at 7 p.m. and will highlight both music and memories from the 1980s.
From hair bands like Poison and Whitesnake, to the metal of Quiet Riot, to the
"Cheeseball Dedication" of the night (which allows callers to dedicate
cheesy '80s love songs to their significant others), Unchained '80s is a "can't
miss" for anyone who ever held the high score for Donkey Kong at the Dream
Machine. From:
